Style: Country rock; compare to Son Volt, Great Lake Swimmers, Neil Young
Top tracks: "Israelite & Okies," "Dancin' on the Devil's Elbow" and "Turn it Around"
Lost Dogs—the eclectic supergroup made up of guys from Daniel Amos, The Choir, and The 77s—went dark for four years till returning this year with Old Angel. The project is front-loaded with charming country songs about "travel this broken road, strapped to the mercy seat" (from "Israelite & Okies") with mostly acoustic instruments and sweet harmonies. Unfortunately, the last half-dozen tracks sound like throwaway outtakes from previous releases, including "Dead End Diner" with its goofy lyrics about "breaktime for the babysitter" and a repeating guitar part that sounds like CCM circa 1993.
