Behind the Story

From editorial director of news Kate Shellnutt: I never expect to see Christianity Today in the wild, so it’s always exciting when I spot a copy in a pastor’s office, a church lobby, or someone’s house.

At our small group meeting last week, the leader had the CT Advent devotional—A Time of Wonder—on her side table. I thumbed through it because I hadn’t seen it in person yet. (The printed format is an upgrade from years’ past, with higher-quality paper and perfect binding to match the style of our redesigned magazine.)

A few years ago, I had ordered a CT subscription for my best friend so she could read what I was writing and editing. I was visiting her house, and she started to apologize. “I’ve been receiving the magazine,” she said, “but are you offended that we keep all the issues in the bathroom?” I told her not at all! I was happy they were getting read, no matter where.

in the magazine

As this issue hits your mailboxes after the US election and as you prepare for the holidays, it can be easy to feel lost in darkness. In this issue, you’ll read of the piercing light of Christ that illuminates the darkness of drug addiction at home and abroad, as Angela Fulton in Vietnam and Maria Baer in Portland report about Christian rehab centers. Also, Carrie McKean explores the complicated path of estrangement and Brad East explains the doctrine of providence. Elissa Yukiko Weichbrodt shows us how art surprises, delights, and retools our imagination for the Incarnation, while Jeremy Treat reminds us of an ancient African bishop’s teachings about Immanuel. Finally, may you be surprised by the nearness of the “Winter Child,” whom poet Malcolm Guite guides us enticingly toward. Happy Advent and Merry Christmas.
