From Kate Shellnutt: When freelance reporter Maria Baer was writing this week, she was afraid she was going to get kicked off her public library’s Wi-Fi network. She wasn’t searching for pornography but for information about pornography—research studies, statistics, and trends in usage. She had to carefully word her queries to get what she needed and not something that the library didn’t want her to see.  
 
We run an article or two a year related to pornography use and the church’s response and inevitably run into extra little hurdles each time. Even with stories that are straightforward and “PG” in content, there’s the question of how we illustrate something that is by definition explicit. Beyond using stock photos of people looking at nondescript screens, our designers need extra time to think through how to creatively represent these stories.
 
Then there’s the issue of this very newsletter. Putting “porn” in a subject line can flag all sorts of spam filters or content blockers. Our team said it should work okay this time, so I hope we made it into your inbox.
