Be Afraid

There Are No Gods, Only Teeth

Cosmic horror and monsters we create.

This week on Be Afraid, we take a look at cosmic horror, exploring the monsters we make in our quest to control that which is uncontrollable. Could it be that a world exists that has nothing to do with human cares or concerns? If so, how might we respond?

Joining us this week:

Damien LeVeck is a filmmaker best known for writing and directing The Cleansing Hour, which is one of Shudder’s all-time most popular movies. His next project is a holiday-themed monster movie called A Creature Was Stirring. Pre-order the movie here and check out the rest of Damien’s work at https://skubalonentertainment.com.

Craig Detweiler is a filmmaker and dean of the College of Arts and Media at Grand Canyon University. He is the author of several books, including Deep Focus: Film and Theology in Dialogue.

Madison Pierce is associate professor of New Testament at Western Theological Seminary and the cohost of The Two Cities podcast. She is also a horror aficionado and happens to be a pretty big fan of all things Mike Flanagan.

Sarey Martin Concepción is a filmmaker and cofounder of TidyCo Creative. Her next film is currently in post-production. It’s a sci-fi horror short called The Winemaker.

David Taylor is associate professor of theology and culture at Fuller Theological Seminary.

Mac Brandt is an LA-based actor who has appeared in series as wide-ranging as Arrested Development, The Thing About Pam, and Lovecraft Country. More recently, he made an appearance in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
