Behind the Story

From The Bulletin podcast producer Leslie Thompson: Listening to the interviews in our new miniseries Stop. Look. Listen. one after the next, I was struck by the impossible task we are given in our time on earth: to be aware of the labor pains as creation stumbles through its broken existence and to imagine how to follow God’s ways. Especially in the election season, it seems impossible. We hold firm to convictions deeply rooted in theology, unable to see how any other choices are rooted in the truth of God’s Word. How do we proceed?

Our guests exemplify a greater mysterious truth, that in the midst of the “one way” of the gospel, there are yet many ways to realize the kingdom of heaven on earth. Because, wonder of wonders, God works regardless of the principalities to write the story of redeeming that which, at times, seems too far gone. We can vote differently and still find ourselves in the full, gracious, loving view of the throne of God. And this brings me comfort when almost nothing else will.

I’ve committed adultery in my heart many times.

Cover of the September/October 2024 Issue

Our September/October issue explores themes in spiritual formation and uncovers what’s really discipling us. Bonnie Kristian argues that the biblical vision for the institutions that form us is renewal, not replacement—even when they fail us. Mike Cosper examines what fuels political fervor around Donald Trump and assesses the ways people have understood and misunderstood the movement. Harvest Prude reports on how partisan distrust has turned the electoral process into a minefield and how those on the frontlines—election officials and volunteers—are motivated by their faith as they work. Read about Christian renewal in intellectual spaces and the “yearners”—those who find themselves in the borderlands between faith and disbelief. And find out how God is moving among his kingdom in Europe, as well as what our advice columnists say about budget-conscious fellowship meals, a kid in Sunday school who hits, and a dating app dilemma.
