Today’s Briefing

After suspending top leaders and launching its own investigation into allegations of financial misconduct, Christian charity Barnabas Aid is the subject of a UK government inquiry.

Seeing the homes lost in Hurricane Helene deepens our longing for the restoration of all things.

CT’s review says We Have Never Been Woke is required reading for understanding why so many working-class conservatives remain loyal to Donald Trump.

Amid the current moral panic over technology, let’s not forget that we are responsible for the digital landscape we’ve created

Christians’ moral imagination can outshine political bitterness and infighting.

Behind the Story

From political correspondent Harvest Prude: I’ve been trying to find the best time to go to the crucial swing state of Pennsylvania. When the Trump campaign announced it was returning to Butler, the site of the attempted July 13 assassination, that clinched it. I would go. An added benefit of this reporting trip is it’s 30 minutes from CT news writer Megan Fowler. After all, “Two are better than one” (Ecc. 4:9).

Megan gave me advice on the best local spots to scope out. And at the rally, having two reporters meant that one of us could camp out in the press pen and take notes on the speakers while the other weaved through the crowd interviewing attendees.

While there are advantages to centrally located newsrooms, having eyes and ears all over the country helps us report complex stories. Sometimes, an extra person means you get more personal details.

Cover of the September/October 2024 Issue

Our September/October issue explores themes in spiritual formation and uncovers what’s really discipling us. Bonnie Kristian argues that the biblical vision for the institutions that form us is renewal, not replacement—even when they fail us. Mike Cosper examines what fuels political fervor around Donald Trump and assesses the ways people have understood and misunderstood the movement. Harvest Prude reports on how partisan distrust has turned the electoral process into a minefield and how those on the frontlines—election officials and volunteers—are motivated by their faith as they work. Read about Christian renewal in intellectual spaces and the “yearners”—those who find themselves in the borderlands between faith and disbelief. And find out how God is moving among his kingdom in Europe, as well as what our advice columnists say about budget-conscious fellowship meals, a kid in Sunday school who hits, and a dating app dilemma.
