LEADERSHIP BIBLIOGRAPHY

For Christian leaders, the most helpful money books fall into three categories: 1) personal financial management, 2) church financial management and planning, and 3) philosophical/theological perspectives on money, stewardship, and possessions.

Brattgard, Helge. God’s Stewards. Minneapolis: Augsburg Publishing House, 1963. A theological examination of the biblical principles for stewardship.

Burkett, Larry. What Husbands Wish Their Wives Knew About Money. Wheaton: Victor Books, 1977. One of his series of pragmatic financial guides. Other books (published by Campus Crusade for Christ, San Bernardino, California) include Your Finances in Changing Times and Christian Financial Concepts.

Carr, Oscar C., Editor. Jesus, Dollars, and Sense. New York: Seabury Press, 1976. A variety of contributing scholars in three sections: the theology of stewardship and money, methodologies concerning increasing financial faithfulness, and sermons on stewardship themes.

Clinard, Turner Norman. Responding to God: The Life of Stewardship. Philadelphia: Westminster Press, 1980. A biblical examination of how to be faithful in the stewardship of gifts and money in the home, church, and world.

Eller, Vernard. The Simple Life. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans Publishing, 1973. An examination of the Christian stance toward possessions.

Fisher, Wallace E. All The Good Gifts. Nashville: Abingdon Press, 1979. An examination of the cost of discipleship in relation to money, possessions, and abilities.

Fooshee, George and Marje. You Can Beat the Money Squeeze. Old Tappan, New Jersey: Fleming H. Revell, 1980. Suggests ways to adjust lifestyles and manage finances in the midst of fixed incomes and inflation. A follow-up to the book, You Can Be Financially Free.

Gross, Malvern and William Warshauer. Financial and Accounting Guide For Non-Profit Organizations. New York: Ronald Press, 1979. A useful tool for the church treasurer or financial planner.

Hess, Bartlett L. and Margaret J. How to Have a Giving Church. Nashville: Abingdon Press, 1974. Sound and practical advice to the pastor on encouraging giving.

Hoffman, Douglas R., Editor. The Energy-Efficient Church. New York: The Pilgrim Press, 1979. How to take energy-saving and money-saving measures in a church building.

Holck, Manfred, Jr., Editor. Church Management: The Clergy Journal. Church Management Inc ., P. O. Box 1625, Austin, Texas, 78767. A professional journal of ten issues annually. Topics include stewardship, budgeting, personnel, taxes, and building operation.

Holck, Manfred, Jr., and Manfred Holck, Sr. Complete Handbook of Church Accounting. Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey: Prentice Hall Inc., 1978. A comprehensive guide written by two C.P.A.’s who understand the church’s need for accurate and easy to comprehend financial recording systems.

Holck, Manfred, Jr. Money and Your Church. New Canaan, Connecticut: Keats Publishing, 1974. Includes suggestions on fund raising, purchasing, compensation, accounting, and budgeting.

Kelley, Dean M. Why Churches Should Not Pay Taxes. New York: Harper & Row, 1977. Defends churches’ tax-exempt status.

Kilgo, Edith Flowers. Money Management. Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1980. Dollars and sense for Christian homemakers. Contains bargain-hunting ideas, living on a fixed income, and budgeting.

Lindgren, Alvin J., and Norman Shawchuck. Management For Your Church. Nashville: Abingdon Press, 1977. Applies system theory to the church in a discussion of budgeting, problem analysis, and decision making.

McGeachy, Pat. Traveling Light. New York: Abingdon Press, 1975. A biblical challenge on how to keep the things you own from owning you.

MacGregor, Malcolm. Training Your Children to Handle Money. Minneapolis: Bethany Fellowship, 1980. A guide to assist parents in giving children financial responsibility.
