Dave Matthews’ musical legacy and fan base are so secure that he could wander the rest of his days without releasing any new music and few would complain. Artist that he is, Matthews is pushing further forward, and his eighth studio album with his eponymous band is filled with copious amounts of warmth and humanity. Sure, most of the lyrics here do fall into a typical folk-pop formula of lost love laments, but throughout, he sprinkles anthems that speak to the strength of community, standing up “for what we need to be,” and seeking solace in the spiritual.
