Julie Lee & the Baby-Daddies, comprised of songwriter Julie Lee and several musical friends, is a delightful compilation of southern Americana throwbacks with undertones of jazz and blues. Enlisting the talent of artists like Alison Krauss and Jason Goforth (Over the Rhine), the band deserves a shout-out for its togetherness and creativity on long instrumental refrains in a variety of genres, from soulful spirituals and original hymns like “Unto the Hills” to folksy numbers like Carly Simon’s “Older Sister.” Lee herself tells tales and touts wisdom like the best of the industry’s down-home leading ladies, all with exquisitely rich vocals and palpable sincerity.
