Charlie Hall’s discography has always dared to probe the darker aspects of the Christian faith. But The Rising counters his characteristic introspective brokenness with resurrected hope, perfectly illustrated in the title track’s corporate bridge: “Our clenched fists raise and slowly open / To the God that saves and heals the broken.” Juxtaposing his more moody reflections with straightforward praise, The Rising‘s brighter perspectives have not dulled the worship leader’s artful senses. Trendy synths, percussive candies, and a sitar-sounding riff inside the indie rock, two-beat backbone of album standout, “Ransom,” further sets Hall apart as a paragon in today’s worship music scene.
