Died • ArthurHolmes, former Wheaton College philosophy professor who advocated the integration of faith and learning in higher education, on October 8. He was 87.
Died • Fred Shuttlesworth, Baptist pastor and civil rights pioneer who co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, on October 5. He was 89.
Resigned • Paul Crouch Jr., vice president and chief of staff at Trinity Broadcasting Network, in October. He has since joined The World Network as director of project development.
Named • Ellen Johnson Surleaf, Methodist president of Liberia, as one of three women awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on October 7. She is Africa’s first democratically-elected female president.
Died • Jessy Dixon, gospel singer, songwriter, and pianist who worked with such artists as the Gaithers and Paul Simon, on September 26. He was 73.
Stepping down • Mark Rutland, president of Oral Roberts University, to enter a “new phase” in his career. He will step down within the next two years.
