Much biblical exegesis excels by squeezing every last detail from short texts. But Mark Dever, an expository preacher at Capitol Hill Baptist Church in Washington, offers a unique New Testament survey that covers each book with one sermon-length chapter.
The Message ofthe New Testament:Promises Keptby Mark DeverCrossway559 pp.; $29.99 |
Dever’s messages focus on how Jesus fulfills God’s Old Testament promises. He expounds on the major themes he believes each biblical author intended. Dever never assumes gospel familiarity. His evangelistic tone and pastoral concern help soften the blow of some of the teaching. (“And have you recognized the way God tenderly and terribly, with wonderful power, sweeps you and your wrongful pride off the throne and gives you a clear view of himself?”)
Reflection questions draw out each Bible book’s most salient points. Much of Dever’s exegesis echoes Paul’s concern for sound doctrine.
