I have been reading Lamentations lately. Jeremiah expresses his personal pain and anguish over the tragic fate of Zion though recognizing that the judgment of God is righteous and deserved. Then he bursts forth with a glorious and thrilling word for any day of adversity. “But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is thy faithfulness” (3:21–23). What a note on which to begin each day!
